  18.      LANGUAGE TEACHER is a series of menu-driven language tutorial programs
  19. designed to be run on the IBM PC or any compatible clone. Each program in the
  20. series contains hundreds of word combinations and verb conjugation forms. A
  21. line printer can be used with LANGUAGE TEACHER to take advantage of its
  22. versatility.
  23.  
  24.      Also included is the capability to select language-to-English or
  25. English-to-language combinations, choose multiple choice answers, be retested
  26. on misses, print a multiple choice test, and to run a full quiz diagnostic
  27. routine with line printer output. Of particular interest to non-English
  28. students is the capability to select the direction of the combinations.
  29.  
  30.      All words, phrases, and verb conjugations are selected randomly by the
  31. program; the user being unable to predict what the next selection will be. The
  32. program package is not designed to teach conversational skills or
  33. pronunciation but, instead, to provide practice drills in order to increase
  34. your working vocabulary and to perfect your use of the conjugation forms.

  37. PROGRAM SPECIFICATIONS:
  38.  
  39.      Minimum system configuration: LANGUAGE TEACHER is written in BASIC and
  40. compiled with Borland International's Turbo BASIC compiler. The program
  41. requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM, one disk drive (or a hard disk) and a
  42. suitable high resolution monitor. 
  43.      Optional equipment includes an 80 column printer.

  46. EVALUATION VERSIONS VS. REGISTERED VERSIONS:
  47.  
  48.      Evaluation versions of the Language Teacher Series have the following
  49. limitations:
  50.  
  51.      1. There are a limited number of data files supplied with the program. 
  52.         See the table below for a listing of the data files that appear.
  53.  
  54.      2. Options to edit the data files, modify random selection timing
  55.         defaults, and modify the type of printer are not active.
  56.  
  57. Of course, the registered versions of the Series contain a full set of data
  58. files and have all applicable options active.

  123. INSTALLATION/RUNNING INSTRUCTIONS:
  124.  
  125.      Each evaluation and registered Language Teacher program comes with its
  126. own specific installation and running instructions. Refer to these
  127. instructions when you receive your disk(s).
  128.  
  129.      NOTE for evaluation programs: If you downloaded this program from a
  130. Bulletin Board, just unZIP the ZIP archive into a selected subdirectory and
  131. run the program TEACHER for color systems or TEACHER /M for monochrome
  132. systems. If you purchased your copy from a sharware distributor, refer to the
  133. sharware distributor's loading and running instructions.

  136. SPECIAL CHARACTER SET:
  137.  
  138.      LANGUAGE TEACHER utilizes the keyboard function keys to represent the
  139. special characters used in the language. These keys are active only when a
  140. non-multiple choice drill is selected, in which you must spell out the exact
  141. answer. The 25th line of the screen will display which function key is
  142. associated with which foreign character.
  143.  
  144.      HP LaserJet printer owners note that the printer's internal font 0 will
  145. print all the special characters.
  146.  
  147.      Due to the inability of some line printers to be able to recognize these
  148. special characters, there is a main menu option that allows you to toggle the
  149. conversion of these special characters to their "normal" letters before being
  150. output to the line printer. Once you have obtained your printout, insert the
  151. special marks by hand. The default condition is to recognize an IBM compatible
  152. printer.

  155. MISCELLANEOUS:
  156.  
  157.      If a multiple choice type quiz has been selected, you will only be given
  158. 15 seconds (25 seconds for verb conjugation) to input your answer. If the time
  159. expires before you make your choice, you will be credited with an incorrect
  160. answer. NOTE that these are the default values for the program. These default
  161. values can be changed at any time via a main menu option.
  162.  
  163.      If you have not chosen a multiple choice type of quiz, you will have to
  164. type in the exact answer. In the case of being quizzed with a noun, you must
  165. also type in the definite article ("the") that proceeds the noun.
  166.  
  167.      If your original option was the verb conjugation drill, no retesting can
  168. be performed. Also, the diagnostic display will let you know how many of each
  169. person and tense you missed. If you missed more than 3 of any person/tense, an
  170. "*" is displayed beside the applicable person/tense, indicating you need more
  171. practice.

  174. REGISTERED VERSIONS:
  175.  
  176.      All users who register their program(s) will receive a copy of a Hard
  177. Disk menu system that will enable you to run multiple Language Teacher
  178. programs from a DOS menu written in Turbo Pascal and compiled with Borland
  179. International's Turbo Pascal Compiler. This program will allow you to switch
  180. between any of the Language Teacher programs (up to 7) at the touch of a key.
  181. The menu program will be customized to your specific Language Teacher
  182. application(s).
  183.  
  184. NOTE: This program is only available to registered users and is the only
  185.       way to run registered versions of the programs.
  186.  
  187. NOTE: The hard disk menu system will NOT work with DOS versions below 3.0. If
  188.       you do not have access to DOS 3.0 or above, notify us so that an
  189.       alternative method of running your Language Teacher program can be
  190.       provided.

  193. FILE EDITING CAPABILITY:
  194.  
  195.      With version 2.x of the Language Series, you have the capability of
  196. editing the vocabulary and phrase files. The editing functions are selectable
  197. from the main menu. With this feature, you can create your own word lists. You
  198. cannot create any additional lists, but you can modify the existing data to
  199. add new items. Note that, due to the complexity of the verb conjugation files,
  200. they cannot be edited.

  203. VOCABULARY WORD LOOKUP:
  204.  
  205.      With version 2.3, an option has been added to allow you to use your
  206. Language Teacher program like an English/Language dictionary. When choosing
  207. this option, you will be prompted for English-to-Language or
  208. Language-to-English. NOTE that if you enter a foreign language word, the
  209. definite article must also be supplied. This is in keeping with the importance
  210. of the definite article in most foreign languages.
  211.  
  212.      If you have a registered version of the program and are using the
  213. Language Teacher hard disk menu system with both Language 1 and Language 2,
  214. both Language subdirectory data bases will be searched for a vocabulary match.

  217. ADDITIONAL NOTES:
  218.  
  219.      The extent of the vocabulary of each program is given below. Since the
  220. program randomly selects from its contents in each option, you truly have a
  221. thorough drill in each language!

  223.  SPANISH 1: 750 Spanish/English word combinations, 1488 verb
  224.             conjugations and 150 Spanish/English phrase combinations.
  225.  
  226.  SPANISH 2: 800 Spanish/English word combinations and 2108 verb
  227.              conjugation forms.

  229.  FRENCH 1: 784 French/English word combinations, 1600 verb
  230.            conjugations and 196 French/English phrase combinations.

  248. SHARWARE DISTRIBUTORS:

  250.      Many shareware distributors are presently selling evaluation copies of
  251. The Language Teacher series. Buyers should beware of these distributors.
  252. Disks are often sold with missing files, missing or incorrect instructions,
  253. bad disks, etc. We continue to receive an endless stream of complaints from
  254. purchasers of shareware disks. We wish to emphasive that we are NOT affiliated
  255. in ANY way with ANY shareware distributor and, as such, do not receive any
  256. proceeds from the sales of these shareware disks.

  259. REVISION HISTORY:
  260.  
  261. 1.x - Original version(s) of the Language Teacher series.
  262.  
  263. 2.0 - Series made compatible with and compiled with Borland International's
  264. Basic compiler. Now supplying two versions of the programs: one for use with
  265. non-color systems, and one for use with color systems. Incorporated fixes to
  266. all known bugs. Incorporated all sensible suggestions. Also added a Hard Disk
  267. menu system for registered users. Added the capability of editing the
  268. vocabulary and phrase files.
  269.  
  270. 2.1 - Color and monochrome versions combined into one program, with the
  271. default being the color version. The monochrome version is selected by adding
  272. the command line parameter /M when loading the program. Fixed a bug in which
  273. special characters (entered by using the Alt key and the keypad) could not be
  274. entered. This was actually a bug in the version 1.0 of the Borland Basic
  275. compiler, and not a program bug. Version 1.1 of the Borland BASIC compiler was
  276. used to compile version 2.1 of the Series. Fixed a bug in which editing a
  277. phrase containing a comma (,) would cause the system to crash. Fixed a problem
  278. in which the System Clock was used to time the Multiple Choice option. This
  279. caused the System Clock to be incorrect upon exiting from the program.
  280. Internal program timing now solves this problem. In conjunction with solving
  281. the previous problem, a new option has been added to the Main Menu to allow
  282. the user to manually set the amount of time allowed to make a multiple choice
  283. entry. Added a new main menu option to be able to select between an IBM
  284. compatible printer that can display the IBM extended character set and one
  285. that can't.

  287. 2.2 - Version produced for registered owners only. Version incorporates better
  288. "handshaking" with new version 2.2 of registered owner hard disk menu system.
  289. No technical or cosmetic changes made to main program coding.
  290.  
  291. 2.2 - Minor fix to correct problem in which program did not recognize the IBM
  292. compatible printer condition.
  293.  
  294. 2.3 - Added new menu option in which you can use the program like a
  295. dictionary. Vocabulary words can be entered and an equivalent match will be
  296. searched for.
  297.  
  298. 2.4 - Corrected a bug in French 2 in which French to English non-multiple
  299. choice entries could not be made. Also added a tagline on the bottom of the
  300. word editing screen, displaying the keys associated with the special French
  301. letters. Corrected a bug in French 1 in which the evaluation copy would freeze
  302. the computer when choosing the phrase translation drill.
  303.  
  304. 2.5 - Due to reports of screen clearing problems, recompiled the entire
  305. series, removing special high-speed screen clearing assembly programming. It
  306. appears that this code was causing some problems with certain BIOSs,
  307. especially with "true blue" AT models. Initiated plans to distribute
  308. evaluation versions of the series.
  309.  
  310. 2.51 - Corrected bug causing vocabulary word "type" to be incorrect. Minor
  311. cosmetic display changes.
  312.  
  313. 2.52 - Added capability to select whether to display/print the definite
  314. article during vocabulary drills. Minor cosmetic display changes.
